Years ago, when watching movies, I would often look at the characters and dream of being like them.  These characters were always the ones living creative lives. These lucky people were artists with amazing studios or groovy people who owned cute looking cafes or they were cool designers creating wonderful things.  Funnily I never aspired to become the lawyers, doctors or corporate types.  I’d always imagined these lucky creative people were born into these lives…these lives were for other, talented people and not for one second did I believe I could have a life like that.

I do find it strange when I look back now and reflect on my choices. The generation I was born into wasn’t brought up to believe they could be anything they wanted to be, like our kids these days.  It was assumed I would get married and have children, so why did I need a career or big hopes and dreams of my own.  But really why did I accept this?  Who’s permission did I really need to become whatever I wanted to be?  The silly thing is I am sure my parents would have be totally supportive of whatever choices I made, if I’d wanted them enough.  The only permission I needed was my own.

Is there something in life that you are drawn to that you don’t give yourself permission to do?  More likely than not, what’s stopping you isn’t the lack of ideas or a lack of ambition or lack of talent.  It’s your own permission to evolve into the person you always wanted to be.  Have you also always dreamt of being an artist or perhaps you are the person who is hooked on courtroom dramas wishing they could be that hotshot lawyer?

What changed for me

The thing that changed for me was changing my mindset.  The realisation that if I didn’t start taking small steps towards living the life I aspired to then nobody else was going to make it happen for me.  I was not young when I decided this…I was in my late 30s with three kids and responsibilities.

The thing that spurred me on the most was the thought that I didn’t want to get to the end of my life and regret all the things I hadn’t done.  Who wants to spend a life doing more of what is expected, rather than not enough of what you want to do.  All you need to do is believe that you can. Give yourself permission to live the life you want x

Indistractable by Nir Eval
“Indistractable provides a framework that will deliver the focus you need to get results.” (James Clear, author of Atomic Habits).

You sit down at your desk to work on an important project, but a notification on your phone interrupts your morning. Later, as you’re about to get back to work, a colleague taps you on the shoulder to chat. At home, screens get in the way of quality time with your family. Another day goes by, and once again, your most important personal and professional goals are put on hold.

What would be possible if you followed through on your best intentions and what could you accomplish if you could stay focused and overcome distractions? What if you had the power to become “indistractable”?

The Unmistakeable Creative – Tom Asaker – The Business of Belief
Belief is what drives people’s decisions. This has to do with people’s desires. Their desires drive their beliefs and their beliefs drive their actions, period. It’s as simple as that and it’s as complex as that that because people are unaware of this. We are being pushed and pulled by our environment. We’re just trying to make it through the day: have a decent day, have nothing go wrong, and at the end of the day flip on Netflix. That’s what’s going on in the marketplace. When you get somebody to adopt what you do, you’re getting somebody to switch one belief for another belief and then going back on autopilot. – Tom Asacker.  Listen here

Hosting with Heart – Sarah Andrews
Sarah Andrews, arguably Australia’s most successful Airbnb host, now has the world firmly in her sights.

Sailor, stylist and entrepreneur, Sarah Andrews is the owner of Captain’s Rest, a once desperately run-down but now fairytale-like, renovated shack located in the north-western Tasmanian town of Strahan.

After the breakdown of her marriage and a couple of serious health crises, Sarah took a gamble and purchased the shack on a whim – sight unseen – in the mid 2010’s.

Although originally intended purely as a sanctuary for her, it has since become one of Australia’s most in-demand short-term rental properties, commanding a nightly rate and occupancy levels most hosts can only ever dream of.

These days, Sarah runs ‘The Hosting Masterclass’ both online and in-person around Australia and has exciting plans to take the class to a global audience in 2020.  Listen here  Here is her gorgeous property below.
