Sand sculpting Australia
Sand sculpting as an art form has been around for centuries. No one knows just how long, as there has been conjecture that even the ancient Egyptians made sand models of the pyramids.
Rye Accommodation and Sand sculpting History
In 2000, sand sculpting came to Rye beach, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula in the form of a single sculpture display. The following year, over 20,000 people travelled to Rye to see the Rye Beach Sand sculpting Championships that were held on the foreshore. The Championship then developed into an exhibition of the talents of sculptors, both local and from around the world. It was a highlight for Rye and increased the demand for Rye Accommodation. Rye has a long history of being a favourite holiday destination for residents of Melbourne and demand for Rye Accommodation is strong during popular tourism times ; long weekends such as Cup Weekend and Queens Birthday, the week involving Christmas, BoxingDay and New Years, with the months of December and January being the peak tourist period. Our Rye Accomodation is central to everything and even though the sandsculpting is not exactly on the doorstep now it is only a 30 – 40 minute drive away at Frankston.
Over the years, the Sand Sculpting Australia exhibition has grown to include not only magnificent sculptures, but sand sculpting workshops for budding sculptors of all ages, and many other sand based activities.

In December 2007, Sand Sculpting Australia opened an exhibition at Lighthouse Square in Port Adelaide (South Australia) and in January 2008 the Victorian exhibition opened to rave reviews at its new home in Frankston, where, for the first time, the sculptures were lit for evening viewing.
For 4 months from Boxing Day, Frankston Waterfront will again be transformed as 3,500 tonnes of sand is carved into spectacular sand sculptures. This year our team of talented International and Australian sculptors will bring to ‘life’ in meticulous detail “Story Land”.
We invite you to immerse yourself into a world where reality and fantasy combine as we bring to life popular Penguin book titles including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Mr. Men and Little Miss Books, Angry Birds, Postman Pat, Angelina Ballerina, Flower Fairies and so many more!
Integrated with the sculptures will Speed Carving Demonstrations, Sculptors Tours and Talks, along with a range of children’s activities including Sand Sculpting Workshops, Sand Art, Sand Bottles, Sand Pens, Sand Diggers, our Giant Sand Pit, Children’s Activity Sheet, Lego Play Zone and the Channel 9 Summer Chill Zone. Plus on weekends and school holidays, there will be roving entertainment and face painting.
