Activities in the area
The small village of Portsea includes the Portsea Hotel which was built in 1927 and overlooks the pier. East of the pier is Point Franklin where a scenic walking track provides elevated views over Shelley Beach to the east and across the bay. Portsea is considered by many to be the hub of the Mornington Peninsula’s recreational scuba diving activities. Dive boats travel to world-class marine national park sites both inside Port Phillip and outside Port Phillip Heads. The Portsea Pier is the home to the spectacular weedy sea dragon, as well as many other fish species, including numerous pufferfish. Port Phillip Bay is a nursery for the wild bottlenose dolphins and their major birthing place is off Point Nepean. There are approximately 90 bottlenose dolphins living and breeding in Port Phillip Bay. The Portsea Surf Beach faces the ocean and is a big attraction in Portsea due to its great surfing conditions and a long stretch of sand. Spectacular views along the coast can be had from the walking trails and scenic coastal pathways meander to lookouts and the rocky archway known as London Bridge. The Portsea Surf Life Saving Club patrols the popular surf beach, as patrols are always needed during the summer period given the large waves and strong tides that are often present. Point Nepean, right at the tip of the Peninsula, is the best-known feature of the Mornington Peninsula National Park. It was closed to the public for more than 100 years, but you can now walk it, cycle it and delve into a remarkable military history that dates back to the 1880s. Another local landmark is the Portsea Golf Club, a links-style course set amongst rolling sand dunes adjacent to Point Nepean National Park.
