There are over 50 wineries on the Mornington Peninsula and while we can’t share all of them we can give a cross section of different wineries and their experiences. In winter our focus is on fireside dining where possible but we do love ‘one out of the box’ and packing a picnic on a clear winter day is always an option.

Polperro (Fine Dining)

During the winter season, Polperro Winery in Red Hill transforms into a cozy haven of warmth and indulgence. The picturesque vineyard landscapes create a serene atmosphere that invites visitors to unwind and savour the delights of the season. Inside the winery’s rustic cellar door, a crackling fireplace casts a warm glow, providing the perfect backdrop for wine tastings. Here, you can sample Polperro’s elegant cool-climate wines, known for their exceptional quality and distinct regional characteristics. As you sip on a glass of their Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, you can soak in the tranquil winter ambiance and admire the panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards.

Indulging in a dining experience at Polperro Winery during winter is a delight for the senses. This is a hatted restaurant so the food is spectacular. The focus is on seasonal local produce picked direct from the property and surrounding areas. Each dish is thoughtfully crafted to complement the cool-climate wines that Polperro is renowned for. There is careful attention to detail and a focus on drama and the use of locally sourced ingredients.

Foxeys Hangout (Tapas Style)

Foxeys Hangout is the place we choose for casual dining in Red Hill, Victoria. Known for its relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, Foxeys Hangout offers visitors a delightful experience that combines excellent wines matched to delicious food.

Their signature sparkling wines, in particular, have gained recognition for their quality and craftsmanship. From crisp and refreshing whites to elegant reds, their diverse wine selection showcases the cool-climate characteristics of the region.

Food is tapas-style and their menu features a delectable array of small plates designed for sharing, highlighting fresh and locally sourced ingredients. The winery features a variety of seating options, including benches, communal tables, and outdoor spaces where guests can enjoy the beautiful surroundings. In winter there is a cosy fireplace.

Kerri Greens Winery (BYO Picnic)

Yes, we know picnics are not ideal for winter but bear with us while we explain! A perfect sunny winters day rugged up from the cold with a glass of Kerri Green Pinot in hand is our idea of heaven. Add to that a BYO option on food with a group of your favourite friends and family and you have the beautiful views of the Mornington Peninsula wine region without the price tag of a hatted restaurant.

Kerri Green Winery is synonymous with exquisite wines and unforgettable picnic experiences in Red Hill, Victoria. What sets them apart is their unique picnic dining option, where visitors can immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the vineyards while enjoying a space to picnic. There is a small fee per person to secure a picnic table but it includes a glass of their wine (you cannot bring any other beverages with you but you can purchase wine from them or soft drinks too and even beer). Savoring a glass of Kerri Green wine amidst the idyllic surroundings, accompanied by a delightful picnic, is an experience that combines the pleasures of great wine, good food, and the tranquil beauty of the vineyard landscape.

Mornington Peninsula Walking Trails

Red Hill Rail Trail (Dog Friendly on Leash)

The Red Hill Rail Trail offers a 6km (one way) picturesque and leisurely journey from Red Hill to Merricks General Store. This scenic trail follows the former railway line and takes you through lush green landscapes, vineyards, and charming rural scenery. As you meander along the trail, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the countryside and the chance to spot local wildlife. Once you reach Merricks General Store, a beloved local landmark, you can take a well-deserved break and indulge in delicious food and drinks. This delightful trail adventure combines the beauty of the outdoors with the satisfaction of reaching a charming destination, offering a memorable experience for nature enthusiasts and food lovers alike. If you have the time and the energy return back to make this a 12Km walk. Otherwise if you are going with a group, park one car at Merricks and then drive to Red Hill and park to start your walk, picking up your other car in Merricks at the end. Saves your legs and the return is uphill so be warned.

Endeavour Fern Gully (no dogs allowed)

Nestled within the picturesque landscape of Red Hill, Endeavour Fern Gully is a natural haven that enchants visitors with its lush greenery and tranquil ambiance. This hidden gem offers a serene escape into the heart of nature, where towering ferns and ancient trees create a captivating canopy overhead. As you wander along the well-maintained walking trails, you’ll be surrounded by a symphony of birdsong and the soothing sound of trickling streams. The gully’s peaceful atmosphere provides the perfect opportunity to reconnect with nature, breathe in the fresh air, and immerse yourself in the beauty of the surroundings.

Lookout Hill Circuit Walk

Lookout Hill Circuit Walk, is a peaceful bush walk tucked away in a small pocket of the Arthurs Seat State Park in Red Hill. This delightful trail meanders through a picturesque landscape of stringybark forest and open sheoak woodlands, offering glimpses of serene gullies and captivating vistas through the trees. As you traverse the path, you’ll be treated to magnificent views of the coastline, stretching from Dromana and Safety Beach to Mount Martha and Port Phillip Bay, with even distant Melbourne visible on clear days.

The walk begins at the end of Eatons Cutting in Red Hill, where parking is limited, and forms a looping route. For those seeking a longer adventure, you can extend your walk by heading down the hill towards Boundary Road in Dromana, resulting in a rewarding 3-kilometer journey. If you choose this option, it’s advisable to arrange a car pick-up at Hillview Reserve to avoid the return trip.
